Yoga Therapy as a Whole-Person Approach to Health

Yoga Therapy as a Whole-Person Approach to Health

$39.55

In this book, Lee Majewski and Ananda Bhavanani define yoga and yoga therapy as a whole person practice, demonstrating how it can help the individual to heal through their own mechanisms. The authors bring yogic concepts from theory into everyday life, exploring how yoga therapy can work with all levels of a human being at the same time (physical, energetic, emotional, intellectual and spiritual) and demonstrating that, when applied correctly, it can assist healing and facilitate an improved quality of life.

The book covers deep yogic work and how it applies to cancer patients, as well as a range of other chronic conditions including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. For each of these conditions the authors explore how yoga therapy can go beyond alleviating symptoms and work to heal the whole person.

Yoga for balance, focus and health…
This book has an excellent focus on health in all aspects of our lives. It leads you into a comprehensive approach for growing your self no matter your age ability or health status.I wish it illustrated the positions but instead it introduces the direction we can choose for our lives and how to go there. Pretty great!

wonderfully accessible and a compelling read
While being thoroughly science based, this book is heartfelt throughout and even as Sanskrit terminology can be daunting, the terms are each softly defined for immediate use. As a physical therapist/yoga therapist, I have stumbled over words and concepts used routinely in yoga therapy and here, felt fully quieted by this book

This is a wonderful book about Yoga Therapy which provides a comprehensive approach to Yoga. It doesn’t see Yoga as an exercise program or a magical pill to cure diseases. It doesn’t restrict yoga to a set of exercises (yogasanas) done on fashionable mats and using props. Rather, it throws light on the comprehensive approach one has to take in healing diseases and also to learn about oneself through Yoga. Starting from understanding the root cause of the health issue (the root cause can be psychological or physiological) , to owning the problem or at least part of the problem (rather than playing the victimhood or getting trapped why me) and being responsible for recovering from it is explained in this Yoga Therapy book (it is not Yogapaty). It stresses the importance of following the Yamas and Niyamas (ethics), a balanced diet, quality sleep, yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation. Dr.Ananda’s knowledge and wisdom as well as Lee’s experience have made this book a wonderful/must read for whoever who wants to practice Yoga (not just Yogasanas). Anyone who reads this book would wish that they had known these things before doing Yoga.

This book relays in a highly accessible and engaging way about how yoga can be used as a therapy in an individual and holistic way. I cannot recommend this book highly enough as a invaluable guide to giving practical help to those needing help through trauma, through both physical and psychosomatic practices. Yoga therapy is becoming increasingly popular but at the same time popular yoga therapy ignores the individual needs and the requirement to treat a person individually regardless of yoga tradition, and really getting to the source of the issue. This book and it’s teachings confront what yoga therapy really is and how it can be most effectively employed.
