Age gracefully with a steady yoga practice—this definitive “user-friendly book” offers “a wealth of information” on how to use yoga to support your physical, mental, and emotional health for a lifetime (Timothy McCAll MD, author of Yoga As Medicine)

Everyone would like to age with as much strength and grace as possible and now numerous studies confirm what many yoga practitioners have known for a long time: yoga practice has a remarkable impact on physical and mental health—and spiritual well-being—as you grow older. Yoga for Healthy Aging is the definitive resource on how to use yoga to foster your physical, mental, and emotional health for a lifetime.

Baxter Bell, MD, and Nina Zolotow, respected yoga teachers and authors of the popular “Yoga for Healthy Aging” blog, explain how yoga can address concerns related to strength, flexibility, balance, agility, cardiovascular health, brain health, and stress management, among other issues. They offer a safe, real-world yoga program to suit your particular needs, which includes poses, breathing practices, meditation, and yoga philosophy. Their program was developed in consultation with scientific and medical experts on aging, and allow you to focus on maintaining overall physical health and/or addressing target problem areas. Yoga for Healthy Aging is a yoga toolbox that will set you up for a lifetime of emotional and spiritual well-being.

A Lot of Info to Absorb
I bought this as a companion to a workshop I took. I haven’t read too far into it and probably didn’t really need to buy it. But it does have a lot of information for me so I keep bringing it with me to read now and then.I do like that the instructors I take classes under align with this info.

As a yoga instructor, I enjoyed reading this book and have already recommended it to friends and family 🙂
As a yoga instructor, I enjoyed reading this book and have already recommended it to friends and family. I really appreciate the illustrations (black & white-but great, clear pics). I love the different sequencing sections (example-“upper body strength practice”), and how it offers four variations/options for most of the poses pictured. There’s also a nice section in the back with contraindications for medical conditions, including issues with knees, elbows, high blood pressure, etc….It’s definitely one of the nicest yoga books I’ve seen-with tons of valuable information included 🙂

Perfect resource for yoga students and teachers of any age
This book is a great companion to Baxter Bell Yoga’s videos on YouTube and the Yoga for Healthy Aging blog (recently gone on hiatus). While the techniques are simple, the depth of explanation is just right for anyone to practice or teach. I always enjoy a good hard copy reference, but bought this one on Kindle as well, so I’d have a copy for the road. I’ve recommended this book to all of my teaching staff and other wellness professionals in the community who are interested in keeping yoga accessible for graceful aging.

    Perfect for begining therapy yoga!
I was recommended yoga therapy by the pain clinic I go to. Never done yoga before so I found this book at local library. Showed it to my yoga therapist, and after examining it, she highly recommended it to my classmates. She also wrote down the book information to pass onto others. This book has so much incredible information and help that I decided to buy it.

    Clear, comprehensive information!
Yoga for healthy aging is more than just a book of yoga poses, although it has an abundance of well photographed variations of poses. What I especially enjoy about this book is that it explains, in clear, easy to understand language, what happens to our bodies as we age and how yoga can help us live a life of greater ease. Highly recommended!

The authors are so clear on the presentation and I love the multiple ways they show to do each pose
After hearing Baxter present at an Accessible Yoga conference in San Francisco, I waited patiently for my book to arrive once it was released. The authors are so clear on the presentation and I love the multiple ways they show to do each pose. I teach chair yoga to seniors and others with physical limitations. The Contraindications section is invaluable. This is my new “go-to” resource and I have already introduced much of what I have read into my classes. Thank you so much!

A must have book for anyone concerned about the issues of safety in your students or your own personal yoga practice. No matter how old we are we are all aging and the goal is to do that to the best of our ability.
