Kids Yoga Stories, a mom-run and mom-operated business, was founded in 2012 by former classroom teacher and certified yoga instructor Giselle Shardlow. During her travels and time teaching grades kindergarten through fifth grade in Guatemala, Australia, Canada, and the US, Giselle witnessed the need to address childhood illiteracy, obesity, and stress. She blended her passions of yoga, mindfulness, and education to create resources to bring yoga and mindfulness to children everywhere.

Wonderfully connecting yoga with everyday life
I ordered this book (and the rest of this amazing set!) for my 11-year-old daughter to use as part of her homeschool program as we learn about yoga. One of the best parts of this book, to us, is how it relates the yoga stances to nature or activities that one would do in nature. Learning yoga seemed a little daunting to my daughter because she was so worried she was “doing it wrong” or “making a mistake”. But relating it to our real lives and real activities made the stances feel very natural and an easy part of our daily movements. It’s not uncommon to see her now break into a stance in the middle of the kitchen based on something she has seen in these books. We LOVED the illustrations in this book as well. Who doesn’t love Fall colors? :)Even though the words are written for a younger reading level, my daughter enjoyed seeing someone roughly her age making yoga an easy part of her every day life.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to integrate more yoga into their child’s life. The story is sweet, the pictures engaging and the poses realistic. It even goes over them again at the end of the book. A well worth it purchase.

    A Fall Favorite!!!
I love this new Autumn Yoga book as it is my favorite season, is very colorful and cleverly shows activities, animals and items of the season through Trish using a camera. Children are familiar with photography but often are not behind the lens. It also helps model organization as Trish and her dad plan their day. It is special as all parents should assist their children with projects for school or things they are interested in or motivated by. I enjoy repetitive use of the word “click!” as my students would like that consistency throughout the book. As with all of her books, Giselle incorporates yoga poses with corresponding pictures. It is nice that each picture has a word color coded in the story so students can make predictions of what is coming next. At the end, Trish uses manners and thanks her father for helping her although they enjoyed the day together. The book has simple minimal text which will allow me to stop and have students spend time on the poses. A good follow up activity would be to take photos of them posing and have them write a fall story using the fall words and poses from this wonderful book and then they could aim at illustrating it as beautifully. The list of poses near the end will be great for follow up Occupational therapy sessions or for those shorter in length or for those students who need more practice. The parent teacher guide offers important yet not cumbersome information. This book makes a great addition to my seasonal yoga books by Giselle and will likely be u sed more often starting from the beginning of the school year until winter. I love the motivational ways to combine movement and learning and adding social/emotional strengths for the benefit of all of my students.

A sweet story to get kids moving and paying attention to details
This book marks the last book for the yoga four seasons series. The story is simple and nice, as a daughter and father go for a fall walk to take pictures, letting children be attentive to details. As with the other books in the series, each element of the story and their fall walk brings different opportunities to incorporate yoga poses into the storytelling, making this book active. The fall colors and nature snippets we see throughout the book are very specific and talk about nature and the specific season of fall. My only reason for not giving this book the five stars is because some of the yoga poses it suggests for the story felt a bit forced, and not so well incorporated into the story as with former books. Of the series my absolute favorite is Rachel’s Day in the Garden because of the combination of story, illustrations and yoga poses. This series is a very nice resource for parents of young children for both doing exercise and teach kids about the seasons.

A Unique, Clever Way To Teach Children About Yoga
Trish’s Fall Photography is another winner from author Giselle Shardlow. I love how the storyline incorporates art, nature, and creativity together in an enjoyable, interactive story. I read the book to my 4 year old daughter and 5 and 6 year old nieces over the weekend and they absolutely loved the colorful pictures and doing the yoga moves along with the story. The most unique part of this book is how the yoga poses correlate so well with each scene. For example, when Trish takes a picture of beautiful fall trees, we do Tree pose and when she snaps a picture of geese in the sky, we do Warrior 3 pose which simulates flying. A major gem of this book is the Parent-Teacher Guide provided at the end. It outlines helpful ways that parents and teachers can engage their children–beyond just simply reading the book. The author provides important safety tips and suggestions for yoga props that can be used to enhance the practice. She explains how the book can be catered to different ages. Although it is geared toward 2-5 years olds, parents and teachers can add higher-level discussion for older children to identify meaningful observations and connections. Finally, she explains in more detail how children can develop mindful breathing and relaxation techniques by practicing yoga, such as the resting pose used at the end of the story. I highly recommend this book and the other interactive yoga stories by Giselle Shardlow. What a clever approach to teaching children about yoga!
