Excellent, Informative Book about Somatic Yoga
I’m a 500-hour certified yoga instructor but didn’t know much about somatic yoga, so I decided to read this book, and I’m so glad I did. It expanded my knowledge and opened my eyes to another branch of yoga. The premise behind this book is that our bodies hold the key to self-discovery and healing. We need to listen to our bodies in order to release tension, lower stress, and have an overall more satisfying life. The scientific portion of the book discussed studies that have shown that somatic yoga can have a significant impact on the autonomic nervous system, especially the vagus nerve, which helps us activate the “rest and digest” response that our bodies need to remain grounded. It also dove into the three areas of sensory awareness: interoception, proprioception, and exteroception. That section was extremely interesting and informative.I especially liked that the author explained how to to prepare for an effective somatic yoga practice. I think that in our busy lives, we rush to our practice without really making time to prepare, and then expect our yoga practice to magically make everything better. She really delves into the preparation, creating a supportive space, tuning into our breath, and being patient with the process. Especially nice is the detailed action steps that she includes for the somatic yoga practice.Toward the end of the book are 25 illustrated exercises that will enhance one’s somatic yoga practice, and the written descriptions beside the pictures are excellent. Those are followed up by breathing exercises that are also very detailed and helpful. The end of the book outlines how to incorporate somatic yoga into our daily lives and further how to make it a lifelong journey. I’d highly recommend this book whether you’re just starting out with your practice or even if you’re a seasoned yogi. I’m certain I will refer to it many times in the future as I continue on my yoga journey.

The Vagus Nerve and Somatic Yoga
This is next level Yoga, which is what I was hoping for. I am, however, a little confused over the term Somatic as this is usually used to distinguish the body from the mind, and yet Somatic Yoga affects the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve innervates multiple organs, with the gut, in my opinion, being the most significant. Innervation of the gut is the most significant because it is lined with over half a billion neurons (brain cells). The vagus never is how the main brain (the one on your shoulders) communicates with the brain in your gut. When there is a disruption in the microbiota, it can change the way you think and, in particular, affect your mood. This, of course, broadens the definition of Somatic.Definitions aside having a positive effect on the vagus nerve can be critical for people with gastrointestinal issues and that makes this from of Yoga regardless of what you call it very useful.

    Excellent information and guide
This is a great book with clear information about the differences between traditional and somatic yoga. It establishes the main focus of somatic yoga and provides a guide with illustrations at the end.

  9. Courtney Campbell

At 79 pages long, 30 of which are illustrations, “Somatic Yoga for Nervous System Regulation” is most definitely an easy read. Experienced yogis may not gain much here, but it’s a solid introduction to Somatic Yoga for absolute beginners, who will likely appreciate it as a quick and easy reference when looking to integrate this type of movement into their practice.
