One value of yoga therapy is its ability to bring us to our senses-figuratively and literally. Inner body sensing and the knowing it evokes is a large part of how we become aware of what we need to attend to and work on in our growth as individuals. In Spanda (R) Yoga Movement Therapy-the yoga therapy method from which this work arises-embodiment practices are as vital to the process of self-understanding as they are to understanding anatomy, anatomical concepts, and physiological processes. This book shares a host of somatic practices that can readily be used in teaching, therapy, yoga practice and other avenues of personal exploration at the physical, energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels. A wealth of illustrated step-by-step directions are given for somatic practice at each koshic level. The practices shared have been in use in clinical yoga therapy, in workshops and in classes for the past thirty years. They’ve resulted in greater knowledge, insight, and awareness of the body and the wisdom it can reveal.

A Gem for Yoga Therapists
If you are a yoga therapist, âSomatic Practice in Yoga Therapyâ is a must have on your yoga therapy bookshelf. Dr. Schmittâs rich background in movement education and somatic practices are woven into a comprehensive and well-rounded approach to yoga therapy. The reader will learn how Laban Movement Analysis, Body Mind Centering, and other movement therapies can inform the client/practitioner. Using the koshic model of yoga philosophy, Dr. Schmitt provides the tools for exploring the five layers of the self, going from outward to inward in the journey toward self-awareness. The somatic practices throughout the book are what make this a one-of-a-kind approach to yoga movement therapy. Yoga therapists, yoga practitioners, and anyone who has a desire to delve more deeply into themselves will benefit from having read this wonderful book.

This is the good stuff- one of the best Yoga and Yoga Therapy Programs Iâve studied
Dr. Jaime has shared profoundly helpful and insightful practices and frameworks in the field of Yoga Instruction and Yoga Therapy for decades; studying under a wide array of phenomenal teachers directly and in long lines of lineages that she honors and complements. I have and continue to learn so much from her and have found great help in my own healing and in sharing yoga therapy with others. This book is very much needed and is an excellent framework to help others in their yoga therapy journeys. This is truly and undoubtedly, the absolute good stuff.

Densely populated with helpful resources
This book comes out of 40 years or more of Dr. Stover Schmittâs personal practices and teaching with others. It is densely populated with helpful resources to explore for a readerâs own inner work and to aid yoga therapy clients. I will be studying it for years to come. Itâs only downside it that it deserves more breathing room as a book – visually.
