DK’s Science of series dives into the science of various types of exercises such as weight training, running, and yoga. Each book discusses the benefits of the specific type of workout and how you can transform your outlook about health and fitness.
How The Book Works
The first section ― human physiology ― introduces you to the wonder that is skeletal muscle and the mechanisms that underpin strength training’s demands on the body. It will help you understand how muscles work and grow, and how the resistance work stimulates muscles to develop strength and size, alongside its positive impacts on bones and connective tissue. It also explains how the body powers muscular work and shows you how to calculate your own daily macronutrient requirements. Lastly, you’re given an overview of the benefits to the brain, and the crucial role it plays in attitude and mental health.
The second section ― strength exercises ― is devoted to a comprehensive collection of strength training exercises to perform, along with many variations offered to compliment your available training equipment, personal preferences, and level of challenge ― at home or in the gym. Each exercise displays the muscles being used throughout the movement with detailed instruction on how to achieve proper form and technique; common mistakes are covered, too.
The third section ― preventing injury ― explores common injuries related to resistance training, with explanations on how to avoid them and how to return to training if you do suffer an injury. A consistent and structured routine, including a proper warm-up, prepares the body for work, and the various mobility exercises and stretches given will help you tune in to how your body is responding to the training.
The final section ― how to train ― outlines everything you need to know about the variables of effective strength training, such as training volume and fatigue management. Whether you want to build muscle, strength, or endurance, you’ll find an easy-to-follow program to suit, as well as alternatives for those wanting to workout more often. Then programs form the base of your training and can be adjusted in the months and years to come.

Excellent Read for Anyone Seeking Fitness
I enjoyed the approach to relate each muscle group, primary and secondary, to the exercise that targets that muscle. The details are easy to understand and put into action. The graphics were excellent and well done. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to strenthen their body and become fit.

The content is amazing, but arrived scuffed.
I gave 5 stars because this book is amazing my goodness. The diagrams and the information was so clearly outlined which is exactly why I bought this book. My issue was that the book came with dog ears and was slightly dirty. I am the only person allowed to dirty my books and give them dog ears, so the book coming like that already was very off putting. I expected the book to arrive in perfect condition but its okay, I chose not to be anal about it and let it go. Great book though! Shoutout to the author, I am learning a lot.

Comprehensive Strength Training Book
I bought 2 other books on strength training but found them lacking–one focused mainly on squats, the other had beautiful photos but nothing about how often to train, how to tell whether you are injured or just sore, what your diet should be, etc. The Science of Strength Training has it all. The color photos show muscles, tendons, bones, etc. in detail. They also show how your muscles change with training, which muscles are worked on which exercise, and how to train for strength versus build. I like this book so much I also bought one for my sister and one for a friend. My fencing coach has also ordered one to help him work with his students. The book is not perfect, I think the section on diet focuses too much on carb, and there’s an error on page 9 (the pictures on endomorph and mesomorph body shape do not make sense to me. I think they should be switched). But these are minor problems for such a comprehensive book. Buy this one and chances are you won’t need to buy another.

I’ve been a gym member for many years and into weight training. I bought this book a couple of years ago and have just ordered a copy for my daughter who has recently started strength training. It’s one of the best I have read on the subject and would recommend it to anyone interested in strength training whether a beginner or experienced. It covers everything you need to know, from how muscles work, grow and gain strength to what exercises you need to do for what muscle groups. It has good quality drawings of the anatomy and a wide range of the different types of exercises for different muscle groups with information on how to do the exercises safely. It also covers nutrition and how to create a progressive strength training program for improvement. A great reference book which covers everything you need to know. The only slight criticism I can think of; the annotations on the drawings are a little small, but still 5 stars from me.
