Still my favorite mat after five years
Best. Mat. Ever. It’s very much like Lulu The Mat. But a bit smaller in size, lighter & more beautiful. Lulu’s The Mat wears down so fast & this one doesn’t. Much lighter than manduka. Thicker/comfier than jade harmony which previously was my favorite. The surface is very absorbent. The grip is amazing – way better than traditional mats – I am so secure in warrior 2. I am able to go through half my hot power yoga class without a yoga towel. Then I lay down a towel during core when my sweat starts really dripping. It performs great when hot & damp, but also when dry. This mat is thick which is awesome for my knees in camel, and feels sturdy rather than squishy. I use chained hair elastics attached to a large button to hold it rolled when not in use. Any mat strap would work, I was just feeling creative & made my own. I used another thick mat before, but it was slippery. Then I used jade harmony but it was too thin. This is perfect.Update: I have had this yoga mat for 2 years now!!! I went through TWO yoga teacher trainings using this every day for hours, and often allowing other students to use it. I practice on it every single day. I do restorative yoga, drip-heavy heated power yoga and Bikram, as well as occasionally an outdoor class. It remains immaculate, as though I bought it yesterday! I cannot say enough good things about this mat. I clean it with JUST WATER and I think this is why it has retained its beauty. Occasionally, like every few weeks, I will clean it with either dish soap, vinegar, lemon juice-dilutred water with a drop of tea tree oil. Not consistent, just whatever is around. Usually it’s water and let hang dry outside. It does not smell (I am a medium-sweater, not a huge dripper but not just a glower). I wish my yoga studio carried this mat, I think I am going to recommend that they do. I don’t use it during my teaching only because I feel like I cannot “sell” it up, since we don’t carry it. But if we carried it, I would tell every student to buy it. Especially that student who face-planted on her lulu mat. The surface is only slightly worn – it’s almost as new looking as the day I bought it. It’s a beautiful mat. It’s thick and comfortable for those with knee issues, it has not matted down much at all – maybe just slightly after two years & only recently. I think I’ll get it in purple next!UPDATE: Year 3 almost to the day. I am finally beginning to see wearing on my beautiful mat. I’ve been practicing at home regularly & just did a third yoga teacher training. I am starting to notice it wearing down at the top middle & top bottom of my mat. I think it’s time for a replacement, but I’ll never throw this one away. They’ll have to bury it with me.UPDATE: It’s STILL my favorite mat after 5 years. It is showing some love wear on the surface but it’s not peeling, and i can see some of the threads around the top and bottom of the mat that are starting to be exposed. I kind of want to buy another identical mat but I kind of want this one to last forever and it’s still 100% functional. Part of me wants another just to test how much better (or not) a brand new one is because I think this MUST have lost some of its cushioning. Right? Well, it is like the tarot deck I’ve had for 25 years, I could buy a new one but the old has become an extension of me, one of my favorite possessions in its perfection as it is not new but still exactly perfect.

Love this mat so much that I just ordered another one.
After 2 and a half years of fairly heavy use, I decided it was finally time to replace this mat. And the main reason for replacing it was because one of my cats decided to start scratching up the surface – my bad for letting it sit where she could reach it. I debated getting a different mat to replace it – manduka, jade, lulu? I read reviews. I talked to other yogis. And I decided to stick with what I already know I like and ordered another gaiam dry-grip. It’s worked great in any type of class I’ve tried. Never had any issues with slipping. And I like the subtle design – not as boring as a plain colored mat, but not in your face either. I like that there’s a little bit of extra weight to it – it stays in place on the studio floor and no worries about wind during outdoor classes. If I had to name a draw back, it would be that it is not reversible.Original Review:I have owned the black version of this mat for over a year and a half and it is still going strong. I’m so use to it that I have a hard time using the normal studio mats anymore on the rare occasion that I forget it. The mat still looks great and I still get people telling me that they like my mat and asking me what it is. I like that it has a design on it, but that it’s subtle and not so in your face as a lot of mats. I take 3-4 yoga classes a week in addition to a home practice. This mat works great for flow, hot, aerial – basically any class I’ve used it in. I’ve even used it for some outdoor classes. I am not a heavy sweater, but in hot classes when I do work up a sweat, I’ve never had issues with slipping. The grip is great and the mat provides a good cushion over hard floors. Other mats I tried seemed squishy and the thickness just condensed down to nothing, but this mat is nice and dense and sturdy. To clean it, I just toss it in my bathtub and just use water to wipe it down super good and then let it air dry.

Beautiful, you WON’T slip, and this mat stays clean!
One year later – and I’m still in love with this mat! PROs: I do not slip on this mat in hot/bikram yoga classes. This mat stays clean for longer. And, this mat will LAST, the quality is superb. Only CONs I can think of: It’s a tad heavier than flimsier mats that are thinner and made of lighter materials. And, I’m not sure if this is specific to this mat (as I haven’t used many others – I made a solid decision purchasing this mat as my first!), but it does get hot in a hot/bikram yoga class if you step on the mat instead of your towel on top. This is probably the case with most or all mats, though. This was the first yoga mat I’ve purchased. Prior, I would rent them at my yoga studio. I’ve used this mat for Bikram style yoga 3 to 5 classes per week for the last year (and am just now writing a review on my purchase), and it works PERFECTLY in the heat environment. Until recently, I would also rent towels at my studio and would have one cotton towel on top of the mat during class that covered maybe the center 60% of the mat. While dripping sweat everywhere for 90 minutes and utilizing parts of this mat uncovered by my towel, I did not have to place my feet on the towel to avoid slipping – I have not slipped once on this mat!Another great quality of this mat is the surface material – it somehow manages to resist absorbing my sweat downpour in class while not becoming slippery from sweat building on top of the mat. I don’t how this works, but, it does – and it’s wonderful. The towels, sure, they absorb sweat completely through and are gross the minute after class – not true with this mat. I often don’t have time to clean it until I get home after work sometimes 12 hours later after a class – and that’s if I remember to clean it – but the mat has never once started to smell even if I didn’t remember to clean it for a while. It seems to stay cleaner, longer. As a bonus, I love that after a year of using this mat very frequently, it still looks brand new, and I still receive occasional compliments on the beautiful design.
