Faith with a Twist: A 30-Day Journey into Christian Yoga

Faith with a Twist: A 30-Day Journey into Christian Yoga

$16.00

Faith with a Twist: A 30-Day Journey into Christian Yoga seeks to bridge the gap between spiritual-but-not-religious by blending the ancient church’s wisdom and the spiritual practice of yoga.

All too often, attempts to blend yoga and Christianity have failed to do justice to both traditions―often sacrificing the wisdom of one tradition for the other. Faith with a Twist connects the traditional eight limbs of yoga with the church’s understanding and emphasis on living a holy life. This approach creates a unique blend of spiritual practices and religious wisdom that are perfect for the yoga novice and the experienced practitioner alike.

Faith With a Twist invites you to strengthen your body, heart, and soul with 30 days of meditations, prayers, and practices. In addition, photos illustrate a series of postures (with helpful modifications that can be done while seated), as well as suggestions on how these practices can complement different seasons in the church year.

Written by Amy Nobles Dolan (an experienced yoga teacher, writer, and spiritual director) and Hillary D. Raining (an Episcopal priest, yoga teacher, and writer), this book is full of practices, prayers, wisdom, and insight that can help any person have a transformative spiritual life.

A most excellent, beautiful, rich and inspiring book
I needed to read the entire book in order to write a review, but it’s important to note that this wonderful little gem is meant to be savored over a 30-day period. As an (almost) lifelong Episcopalian, I was immediately drawn to the prayers from the Book of Common Prayer and especially the book Lesser Feasts and Fasts. But the wisdom and beauty that make up each day so warmed my heart and my soul. There is such potential here to fall in love with Jesus, for the first time or all over again. Each day, using a Yoga principle, Hillary and Amy weave in so much healing and wisdom that get to the deep truth of life in abundance that Jesus promises us is possible. Now I can’t wait to use the book as it was intended: slowly and meditatively over a month. And I was practicing Svaroopa Yoga until several years ago when my husband and I made a major move and Yoga was crowded out. Just now I’ve contacted my former teacher to see about reconnecting!

    A Brilliant Blend
If you’re someone who loves the Lord and want to have a healthier lifestyle, this is your book! The yoga poses and ideology is shared in a digestible way with lovely photos and approachable writing. The yogic teachings are discussed along with Christian teachings, and the blend between the two taught me more about both of these worlds. Highly recommended!

    A rewarding read!
Faith with a Twist is an extremely helpful tool to me as a Christian. Amy and Hilary provide wisdom I can relate to for each intended lesson and explain specific ways to change a behavior such as editing negative thoughts. As well, I enjoy the academic aspect of this book – it offers me a focal point for my often wandering mind. I highly recommend this book.

    Accessible and welcoming!
I wholeheartedly recommend this book! Faith with a Twist is an invitation to a mindful way of living wherein yoga and Christian faith are not relegated to separate silos but are understood as practices that can work together to sustain and support us in our daily lives. Amy and Hillary do a masterful job of explaining the many correspondences they’ve found between the core tenets of Christianity and the philosophical underpinnings of yoga AND they offer the reader practical suggestions for putting their insights into practice. This book was a joy to read!

    Instructions not clear
The instructions were very hard to follow unless you have previously done Yoga, I was under the impression there were videos that showed you the poses.

    Finally!
Many believe there is little overlap between the practices of yoga and Christian life. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Through this book, the authors help the reader to learn about and understand how beautifully the practices are intertwined, and how they point to a similar source of healing and love. I have looked for a book like this for a long time, so thank you Amy and Hillary for creating this resource!

  9. Lady Reb

Like the preamble about the different limbs of yoga and how they can be integrated into Christian message/ethos/mode of living. A good spring board for ideas when combining Christian prayer & meditation into your yoga practice.

  10. Deborah

Beautifully presented course for all abilities that can be adapted for groups
