  1. Our Town Books

A workbook for your reference shelf – it’s that good
Well, if you read my review of Creating Sanctuary, also by Jessi Bloom, you will know I loved the book as well as the pictures. It was such a beautiful book, so full of ideas and beauty that it almost overwhelmed me.Well now I’ve received a free copy of the workbook associated with it, Everyday Sanctuary, and am dying to write a review of it. To begin with, Everyday Sanctuary is what I’ll call my kind of self-help book. Rather like a relaxing spa to keep you organized. Here’s why I have described it that way. It has the same feel and calmness as the first original book, but this is a workbook. A manual to help you really and truly create what you have in mind whether it be for your yard, your health, your mind, you name it. And it has a place to make your own notes for every section. You see, sometimes when I can make my own notes and have ideas and small sections to read, it tends to keep me on track; keep me focused. I think that’s what this book can help you accomplish. This is a companion to Creating Sanctuary. It is, in and of itself, a helpful book. However, there can be no question that the two books together will be something to keep on your reference shelf for a lifetime. I sound overzealous but while both books are great, it is the amount of time and thought that have been put into both of them that is creating the cheerleader in me. I hope Jessi Bloom realizes what she has created. What an accomplishment.

If you only buy one print book this year, this should be it!
I did a read and review for a Netgalley pdf last fall by Jessi Bloom – an herb and flower gardening how-to that I loved. Got a call last month from her publisher, Timber Press, asking for a mailing address, as she had a new book that would be available only in print that I might want to read and review.Folks, that is an extraordinary book, the photos by Shawn Linehan brings your soul to a place of peace. Just holding it, flipping through the pages, is an awesome experience. There are workbook-type pages interspersed between gardening tips and journal entry pages, recipes for healing teas and suggestions for finding that place of rest in your heart. This is a book to treasure. I cannot give it ten stars, but I wish that I could! If you only buy one print book this year, this should be it.

    Nope…
I’m an old gardener and former Illinois Master Gardener. We have an enormous gardening library and enjoy adding to our garden book collection. I purchased after being swayed by the positive reviews but now realize none are verified purchases! This book is very shallow. It has lots of “blank” journal pages (though they are lined for your writing convenience), some prompts for your intended plants and a few lovely images tossed in.Better to look online for images of sanctuary/meditation garden spaces for ideas then find local plant lists of the things that will actually work well in your area.

Create Your Own Gift Everyday Sanctuary
In Everyday Sanctuary, Jessi Bloom offers grounded, actionable guidance in creating your own personal sanctuary, wherever you live. When Bloom states “All of us can use our gardens, the earth, and spaces we inhabit as our personal sanctuary,” she sets a high bar for encouraging us to imagine, declare, and make real our heartfelt desires. In this stunning, beautiful book, she guides, suggests, offers a calm and informed perspective on how each one of us can create our own sacred space. As one reviewer stated, this is a book to buy, to own for yourself and to gift to others. It is as warm, beautiful and pleasurable to hold and use as it is to read. Just paging through the lovely photographs and considering the questions, you will feel refreshed, intrigued, and motivated to look at your world with fresh, honoring eyes. I received a copy of this book via the publisher and I’m reviewing it voluntarily.”

Creating sacred space in our own backyard
Can’t wait to get started. Creating Sanctuary inspired me so much and this book is a great how-to. My partner was so inspired she’s signed up for an herbalist course. I can’t wait to see how we transform our little yard and family’s lives here in DC. Thank you Jessi! (Side note I bought my copy from my local bookstore. BUY LOCAL!)
