The latest work from B.K.S. Iyengar, the world’s most respected yoga teacher.
Foreword from His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
B.K.S. Iyengar has devoted his life to the practice and study of yoga. It was B.K.S. Iyengar’s unique teaching style, bringing precision and clarity to the practice, as well as a mindset of ‘yoga for all’, which has made it into a worldwide phenomenon.
His seminal book, ‘Light on Yoga’, is widely called ‘the bible of yoga’ and has served as the source book for generations of yoga students around the world. In ‘Core of the Yoga Sutras’, he applies this same clarity to the philosophical core of yoga–the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are 196 aphorisms forming the foundational text of yoga philosophy. Each sutra is short and to the point – each being only a line or two long. B.K.S. Iyengar has translated each one, providing an insightful commentary and explanation for modern readers, as well as linking the various themes throughout the sutras to one another.
Each sutra is presented as Sanskrit text, transliteration and English translation, followed by B.K.S. Iyengar’s unique commentary and authority only he can bring to the work.
B.K.S. Iyengar’s insight on the sutras show the reader how we can transform ourselves through the practice of yoga, gradually developing the mind, body and emotions, so we can become spiritually evolved. This is a wonderful introduction to the spiritual philosophy that is the foundation of yoga practice.

Have always liked this book
Have always liked this book, my son is a Yoga teacher and asked me about this, so I bought this copy for him! Is helpful if you have a Yoga background, (many sanskrit terms used in the Yoga Universe) but if you read with patience and read over, it is a wonderful book full of deep insights and Iyengar’s experience throughout his lifetime. If you are serious about Yoga this is the book you would want to go back to. I also recommend Light on Yoga.

Definitely for Iyengar fans . .
I’ve followed Mr. Iyengar for over 20 years and I find his yoga teaching to be amongst the best and truthful instruction available. I have read “Light on Life” and “Tree of Yoga” by him as well as used his “Light on Yoga” technical instruction books. This one doesn’t disappoint either.

Not a book for those unfamiliar with the yoga sutras or terminology in Sanskrit.
This could be a magnificent book, but for those not completely and intimately familiar with the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, this book can spell disaster, because it presents the sutras by conceptualization rather than by individual sutras in proper order. Mr. Iyengar’s book “Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali” Is the very finest of the perhaps 30 different translations of the sutras I have read, but I have not yet been able to conquer the syntax and organization of this newest book by the world’s preeminent Yogi.

A good book to study
At first I thought it was too difficult but then I started it again and am glad I did. BKS has 80 years of yoga experience to share in a new way. This is a book I will read many times.

Great wisdom, difficult read
I have read just about all of B.K.S. Iyengar’s books for their wisdom and insight. Some flow and are poetic others are too often filled with Sanskrit terminology and need deep attention to grasp the intended point. Unfortunately, this new book is of the second type. I bought it with the hope that his life-long study of the Yoga Sutras would shine more light on this the oldest of yogic philosophy. I am sure it does but not in an easily grasped style for modern readers. I have found that it has more to offer to me if I just open to a section and read. I get more from the text this way rather than starting at the beginning and reading it page after page. As always, Iyengar gives us the benefit of his years of practice and wisdom, I just wish it was written more for the general audience rather than scholars of yoga.

BKS continues to grow, as we all should, and continues to enlighten us on yoga in general – who better than someone who has dedicated his life to yoga’s work
