Eco friendly mix of natural rubber and polyurethane for good hand feel, cushioning, good gripe
I like the feel of this mat for a number of performance related reasons. It has sufficient cushioning (for those used to thinner 4-5 mm mats). The length at 72 inches for its standard mat is comparable to other mats in this price class (around $100). The use of natural rubber for the bottom layer which is textured gives this mat a good grip on the floor. The very top of the mat has a thin (colored) layer of polyurethane (PU) which gives this mat a smooth and softer surface that other high quality 100% rubber mats. Because the polyurethane top layer is smooth it is easy to wipe clean in comparison to rubber mats that have a textured top surface. Although the top layer if PU, it still provides a surface that gives feet and hands a good group which is important for stability. A systematic pattern of lines the of which many are at angle, but includes horizontal as well as vertical lengthwise lines are laser etched into the top layer. These lines provide for more grip but also guide the body. Some angle lines are a perfect angle for the rear food in Warrior 2. Other angle lines will perfectly indicated the turned out angle of a calf and foot in modified side angle bent knee position.I looked up Polyurethane as a material and it is safe and non-toxic when it is becomes firm and no longer liquid during the manufacturing process. For me itâs important that this mat does not contain PVC and phthalates. The ad says this mat has a âbuilt to lastâ but no expected live span for the mat is given. A well known American brand of 100% rubber yoga mats has an inner reinforcement layer to which the rubber in that mat adheres to. This mat does not have that. I donât know either that is a plus or a minus or a not issue. This mat comes excellently boxed and packaged. My first impressions are very positive. Only time and constant use will reveal any issues.

This is a really nice yoga mat
When looking at the product pictures of this mat, I thought that the lines on it might be cut into the top layer some and was a little concerned about them accumulating dust or tearing at the edges, but the lines are just printed on the mat so no worries there. It has a smooth surface rather than the sort of dimpled surface many popular yoga mats have, so be aware that it may show body oils (like from my greasy forehead) and lint and stuff more. However, the color and the symmetrical line markings are indeed very centering and calming. I like being able to line up my poses precisely using the lines as guides. This mat is VERY grippy on both sides, which has more upsides in my opinion than downsides. The upsides are that you can hold poses better without fear of slipping (as long as you’re barefoot), and it doesn’t slide around on my carpet as much as other mats have. The downside is that you can’t slide from one position to another or scooch on the mat to reposition as easily as you can with less grippy mats. The mat is a bit thinner than some mats I’ve used, but that doesn’t matter to me since I’m using it on carpet, and it can be useful when traveling with the mat. If you’re using the mat primarily on hard floors and want a little more cushion, you may want to choose a different mat.

Pure grip – great for downward dog
I wanted to give this mat a good test run before reviewing. What I noticed right away was the grip on this mat. It is pure stick! If you have problems sliding on your mat, like I do, I think you will really like how grippy this mat is. This mat helps downward dog to feel amazing! No longer am I feeling uncomfortable because I am constantly sliding forward in downward dog. I have tried to adjust my alignment, I’ve tried several types of mats – this is the only mat that I do not feel myself slide on at all. I have wet the mat down, and the water quickly absorbs into the material. Because of that, the mat continues to have grip even when wet.Having said how grippy it is, there are times in yoga practice where you do want to be able to easily slide from pose to pose. The grip on this mat makes sliding a little more difficult because there is no easily sliding across this mat.Recently, I have been using cork mats. I still slide some on them, but I feel a sense of connection with my body and the cork material. On this mat, I do not feel that connection. It’s hard to describe, but when you put your head and body on a mat, you want to feel that the material is complementary to you. I don’t feel repulsed by this material, but I also do not feel connected with it. Along with that, there was a short period when this material had a slight rubbery scent to it. I cleaned the mat with witch hazel and essential oils, and the smell has now dissipated. This mat also shows any oils from your skin on the rubber material. These oil stains stuck around even after cleaning the mat, and they had slowly faded away, while new oil stains have taken their place. It’s not horrible, but be aware that oils show on this mat. This mat is VERY thin and that is not an issue while using it on carpet. I used it on hard floors and its thinness did not bother me, but that was a vinyasa style yoga. If you prefer slow flow yoga, like yin, or you have bodyaches, you might prefer a mat with more thickness. Also, for how thin this mat is, you’d think it would be lighter-weight. This mat is pretty heavy. I don’t mind the weight. I figure carrying around a heavier mat gives me an extra little workout. But, I have read reviews where people have complained about the weight of some mats. If you’re looking for a lightweight mat, this is probably not the one for you.Overall, this is the grippiest mat I have ever practiced on. I wonder if that grippiness will hold up over time, but for now this mat’s best feature is how the grip helps downward dog to feel amazing! If you’re looking for grip, this is a great mat.
