    This book is formulaic.
The information in the book is true, but obvious and formulaic. Therefore not helpful for me. I need a different approach to these lessons.

  2. Carlos González

This is the second book from the “A Little Book of Self Care” series. This one is on Sleep and Harnessing the Power of Sleep. As a complete insomniac, I was very interested in reading this book. It has been written by a counsellor/hypnotherpist who has moved on to become a sleep therapist. This book is a beautiful little hardback. It is divided into very manageable sections. It looks at ‘Why Sleep Matters’, from children to adults. how much we need, why it is so important. The book then moves onto ‘Sleep Strategies’ – It looks at your environment…the space you sleep in, noise, digital devices…it gives some very handy and helpful tips – i.e. be warned about LED lighting in the bedroom, as it has a similar effect to blue lights on electronic devices, which I had not realised before. This book is crammed full of really helpful hints and tips, for people like myself who find sleeping, or at least staying asleep, quite a struggle. It also looks at your mind, offering tips on relaxation, preparing yourself for sleep. Finally this section, also looks at Your Body…what you eat, yoga, breathwork and setting up a winding down routine, to mention just a few areas I have found incredibly interesting and useful. The book also covers ‘Special Circumstances’ that can affect sleep too; jet lag, restless leg syndrome, mental health as well as covering female health and sleep, as well as menopause. This is a great book for anyone to have. it will also make a great Christmas present for anyone you know who has or has had sleep issues, as there are lots of hints and tips as to how to overcome sleep problems. I will definitely be adopting some of these ideas and techniques into my daily and evening routine to see if it helps. Much of it makes complete sense. Hopefully in a couple of months of trialing I can come back and update this and say exactly what has worked.

I purchased this book second hand but still in excellent condition from an awesome seller. I’m always impressed by the quality of DK printed books and this one is no different. The content however, was underwhelming. If you were putting together a presentation this would be perfect as a guide for layout and bullet points for discussion. I was hoping for more in depth scientific information but got mostly common sense well known facts which I read cover to cover while I had a hot drink.

The book is very accessible: it is quite small and graphic. There are illustrations throughout, and text is presented within that context. It isn’t a book densely packed with text, which makes it readable.Pretty much all the aspects of sleep are covered: environment, mind, body, medical conditions and disrupted routines. There are descriptions of issues, and step by step routines to address them.Whether or not one has problems sleeping, it is an informative book. It may help those who do have problems but on all levels, it is a useful book to have as a compendium that explains sleep from all angles.
