Yoga came to Tibet from India more than a thousand years ago, and it was quickly absorbed into the culture’s rich traditions. In this small book readers will discover Heart Yoga, which developed over the centuries in the Gelukpa tradition of the Dalai Lamas. The program presented here combines popular yoga exercises wtih special Tibetan poses, and methods of working from the inside to give a healthy and a happy heart.
Roach discovered a number of previously unknown Tibetan works on yoga in the course of his ongoing efforts to find and preserve ancient Tibetan Buddhist texts. He discusses the ideas and insights presented in these texts and places them within the context of the Buddhist tradition. To help readers incorporate this ancient wisdom in their daily lives, he provides a specific regime of yoga postures and meditations. Combining instructive illustrations with the unique philosophical underpinnings of the Buddhist approach, Geshe Roach has created a unique program for yoga on a physical and spiritual level.

heart opening
i heard about this small but powerful book when i took tibetan heart yoga classes at my gym, and then followed the teacher to a center in los angeles where the philosophy could be taught as well as the asanas. i’ve never wanted to teach yoga before, but this type of yoga combines the meditative giving of the six perfections while you are doing your asanas. the effect of this works on the outter body as well as the inner thoughts during your yoga practice! it’s very powerful and effective in changing your life in all wonderful ways. this book gently and very specifically explains how it all works. i love it and keep it near me for reference. thank you.

deceptively innocent
This is a very simply presented yet profound insight into the more meaningful aspects of yoga. This is the first book by Geshe Michael Roach I read and led to a long and still current interest in all his teachings.

short and efficient yoga program, for busy people!
Appreciating the importance of Yoga long ago and being very busy…, I was looking for a quick practice. I came upon the “Five Tibetans”, It helped me for 10 years to easily do ‘something”, than nothing!… Now I am so happy to come upon this one, together with the book “How Yoga Works” from the same author, which is the deep Philosofy of Yoga, because it is also short program – 30 minutes only, but the thing is that, both “The Five Tibetans” and this one give you a well balanced and quick system!I guess, for many people the lack of time in the morning before going to work is the stopper for exercising…

Finally the truth is being told!
For about 45 yrs I have done so-called inner energy training of the Chinese, Japanese and of India. This book tells the story in a concise manner, of what has been mostly lost from Yoga Hatha and other arts. I also read “How Yoga Works” by Geshe Michael and am now looking for a workshop to attend. This is strong meat for men and women…not milk for babes.

very thin, mostly familiar yoga postures
There are two very enthusiastic reviews below this one, and I don’t disagree with them. But buyer beware: this is a very, very skimpy book. Once you count in the chapter-title pages, and the half pages that begin and end each chapter, there are just not many words to read.In addition, most of the novelty content, such as it is, stems from the marriage of some very familiar yoga postures with Buddhist tonglen meditation. Don’t buy this book if you think it has a wealth of information on some interesting “Tibetan” asanas. There is not much of that at all here. However, however. I am convinced that if you follow this book carefully, you will achieve great results. This will likely be caused more by the tonglen breathing than by the postures described.Namaste.

A rare Buddhist approach to Yoga
One of very few books with a Buddhist approach to yoga. Itâs very short and doesnât go into a lot of depth, but the heart yoga approach is interesting.

Best book ever – will change your life
I bought this book as a gift for my mom as I already had one. I have taken this book with me on many trips and look forward to spending many more years with it. Why is it such a great practice? In one small book is a 30-60 minute yoga practice with a powerful meditation, prana-yama, and asana practice all in one. Try it, what have you got to lose?

Great book on Yoga!!!
This book is wonderful book about the deeper meaning of yoga. It is a must read for anyone wishing to go beyond the dumbed down version of yoga as merely a set of exercises for a “hot” yoga body. Go to the roots and see how marvelous life can be!

Great book regarding historical beginning of Tibetan yoga. Nice reference to positions as well.

This wonderful book offers a peak into yoga in the Tibetan Buddhist Lineage of the Dalai Lamas. Kept safe in Tibet since about 1000 ad and used only as a very high practice for the elite of the monastic community. These practices differ in presentation to the more common Indian schools that are popular in the west as they emphasise work from the inside out. That is placing the mind on compassion to generate the open heart, whilst working from the outside with the asana; in all a potent mix to acheive the goals of Yoga.A great bookAs Warren says above, i cant speak highly enough of Geshe Michael Roach and Christie McNally and the contribution they make to our planet. They work tirelessly traveling to bring much needed wisdom of the east delivered in a way that makes sense to the western mind. I have no doubt that these teachers have experienced the highest results of these practices therefore qualifying their commentary.

This is probably my most favorite book ever! This simple and profound yoga program in the tradition of the Dalai Lama can change your life. It works on many levels at the same time. It can give you back your waist – and help you open your heart and change your perspective at the same time. It has a beautiful, simple description of the way karma works. I highly, highly recommend this book – and doing the yoga!

I have often wondered about the various types of Yoga, and their roots and I found this little book both helpful as well as inspirational. Nothing too heavy to take on board and a good starter for more reading on the subject.
